  • Overview

    This position is responsible for ensuring the company’s compliance with local, state, and US federal tax requirements for all US payrolls. The position will provide coordination and oversight over the work of the third party in order to ensure the accurate and timely withholding of payroll taxes. This position will also work with the third party to ensure the timely filing and remittance of payroll tax payments with local, state, and federal entities. Must also work with the Payroll Manager and coordinate payroll processes with tax.

    • Strong Microsoft Office program experience, including Excel and Word





    • Perform the daily operations of the payroll tax function, including accurate and timely processing, reporting, and tax administration


    •  Ensure compliance with all taxing authorities and company policies


    • Oversee all facets of multi-state payroll tax payment processing, tax return preparation, and payroll tax reporting compliance


    • Oversee system maintenance to include set up/testing when tax changes occur


    • Coordinate with third party to ensure the research and response to all tax inquires


    • Review/prepare new tax registrations when moving into new tax jurisdictions


    • Ensure accurate and timely preparation, balancing, processing, and funding of payroll tax payments


    • Maintain all tax set up in Workday including coordination of new deduction withholdings, and establishing appropriate withholding for new and/or relocating business units


    • Review/file monthly, quarterly, annual returns for all taxing authorities


    • Research GL balance variances


    • Maintain state unemployment rates in Workday and work with third party


    • Ensure completeness and accuracy of all payroll tax returns and filings, and act as primary liaison between third party processor and Tribune


    • Maintain current knowledge of all payroll tax regulations including federal, state, and local regulations


    • Notify leadership of regulatory updates, and propose and implement required changes


    • Lead year end W-2 processes/reconciliations


    • Support/lead special projects as needed in support of the payroll tax function


    • Develop a thorough understanding of Tribune policies and procedures


    • Duties may change; may be required to perform other duties as assigned




    Work Experience

    • 3+ years’ experience performing the payroll tax function for a multi-state employer having a large employee base
    • Workday system experience preferred



    • CPP certification a plus
    • Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and work experience (3+ years) performing the payroll tax function
