The Content Director for Opinion leads the Sun Sentinel’s opinion leadership strategy and is chiefly responsible for determining the Sun Sentinel’s public positions on state, local and national issues in accordance with institutional mission and guidance from Sun Sentinel Editor-in-Chief. As part of these responsibilities, the Opinion Content Director develops and advocates for Sun Sentinel’s public policy agenda and directs its political endorsement process. This editor plays a unique role in communicating the institution’s values and priorities on all platforms, with a digital-first mentality, and in public appearances.

  • Determines the Sun Sentinel’s editorial positions, in conjunction with the Opinions team, with an emphasis on local and state issues.
  • Writes about three editorials per week, two on issues of importance to the South Florida community and one on statewide issues. Publishes them on and in print.
  • Use social media and SEO best practices to spark readership and conversation about Opinion content.
  • Oversee the Opinions channel on and the opinion journalist assigned to maintain it.
  • In concert with the Editor in Chief, the Opinion Editor develops our opinion leadership strategy, and how it will be executed in digital, print and social media. This may include new features that engage our audiences in new ways.
  • Represents the Sun Sentinel in company-sponsored public policy forums; represents the Sentinel in television, radio and other media interviews and discussion forums.
  • Commissions commentary from external sources, including civic and political leaders whose viewpoints are relevant to the news and germane to the Sun Sentinel public policy priorities.
  • Works in conjunction with the Orlando Sentinel on statewide opinion strategy while being true to the Sun Sentinel’s institutional values and priorities, and representing market differences.
  • Works with Editor in developing and implementing news and organizational strategy.
  • Works with Editor in communicating priorities, strategies, values and enforcing ethics.




  • Deep expertise on a broad range of public policy, political and other issues.
  • Superior skill and experience in formulating and writing opinion journalism.
  • Superior news judgment and consummate editorial skills, such as shaping narratives.
  • Extensive connections with the civic and political power structure in South Florida and the ability to navigate this landscape.
  • Superior people management skills, including a combination of toughness and sensitivity.
  • Excellent communication and coaching skills.
  • Superior critical thinking skills, alloyed with skepticism, optimism and empiricism.
  • Ability to think strategically about audience, media and operating in the economic landscape.
  • Curiosity about the world, events, past, present and future.
  • Knowledge of South Florida and Florida.
  • At least 10 years experience in significant editorial management roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
