Overview

The Orlando Sentinel is seeking a night-shift breaking news reporter to join its Justice & Safety team. This position is ideally suited to journalists who are quick-thinking and versatile, have strong news judgment and relish chasing down a story as it develops.

Responsibilities

You’ll need to be nimble – getting a story online in minutes, while sifting through the noise of a chaotic situation to identify reliable information – but also show the ability to dig deeper, utilizing public records, databases and sources to write compelling follow-up and enterprise stories. The successful candidate must work well on a team and on deadline. Social media skills – both for reporting and research – are required, as is a college degree. The ability to shoot and edit basic video is also expected. Spanish-language proficiency is preferred. Hours are 2:30 to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with an hour break. This is a full-time position with a competitive salary and benefits.

 

  • Covers breaking news after business hours in a large, competitive market.
  • Displays strong news judgment in determining which stories demand the most attention and how to pursue them.
  • Develops sources within local public safety agencies and in the community.
  • Reports and writes quickly and accurately on tight deadlines, whether working remotely or in the field.
  • Routinely identifies opportunities for enterprise reporting and follow-up stories.
  • Collaborates well with coworkers on the Justice & Safety team and throughout the newsroom.
  • Demonstrates comfort reporting on a wide array of topics, ranging from crime and policing to politics, public health, lawsuits, hazardous weather and more.

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field.
  • Strong research and reporting skills, with a familiarity with public record laws preferred.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, Twitter, Facebook, Google Docs, Lexis-Nexis, PACER and other public and court record databases.
  • Examples of thoroughly reported, published work.
  • Passion for good journalism that informs readers and holds the powerful accountable.
