Chicago magazine is hiring a Features Editor. The Features Editor is responsible for assigning and editing long-form features, service packages and smart, well-reported and well-written stories that reflect the city of Chicago and put Chicago Magazine at the center of the conversation.

Our reach extends through our unique partnerships with clients for events and promotions such as the highly-anticipated Secret Supper dining series, our annual Barrel Night event for whiskey aficionados, our annual restaurant event that celebrates the city’s vibrant food scene and our new virtual cooking show In The Kitchen, where our readers can cook along with an acclaimed local chef in their own kitchens.


  • Assign and edit features to fill the monthly features well.
  • Assign and edit stories for Chicago Stories section.
  • Pitch story ideas, and writers for them, constantly.
  • Ensure all parts of the city and the individuals who make up our city are represented in stories and the photography used to illustrate them.
  • Strive to hire diverse writers to tell these stories.
  • Develop fresh ideas for annual feature packages (Best of Chicago, Top Doctors, Top-selling Agents, etc.)
  • Edit departments (312, Found, Table) stories written by department editors.
  • Read departments on galley.
  • Schedule copy editors during monthly production cycle.
  • Find fresh ways to tell stories to our digital audience and work with online editor and social media editor on headlines and posts, as needed.
  • Manage features budget and make sure invoices are submitted by freelancers each month. Make sure all freelancers have signed a current contract.
  • Work with Editor-in-Chief to develop annual Editorial Calendar.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Editor in Chief


  • 5+ years of experience as an editor, including feature editing. In particular: coaching writers through all stages of the reporting and writing process, including securing access to interview subjects, scrubbing public records databases and working with a writer through multiple drafts.
  • A deep knowledge of Chicago, and an unsatiable curiosity to learn more about it.
  • A nose for news and great story ideas. Candidates should see stories everywhere they go, but also be able to refine those ideas and choose only the best for the magazine.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and a demonstrated ability to manage a budget.
  • A deep list of writer contacts and a commitment to refreshing that list constantly and recruiting writers from diverse backgrounds.
