The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, seeks an enterprising and versatile journalist with a passion for community driven news for a general assignment position. This journalist will write daily and enterprise coverage for a local readership, reporting on a wide variety of subjects including but not limited to community events, business, the Naval Academy and traditional breaking news, in addition to writing regular local feature stories. Our reporters are expected to mine social media for leads and shoot photos and video to reach audiences on a variety of platforms – online and print.

  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments and create compelling content that engages readers. 
  • Possess excellent reporting and writing skills to accurately produce content for our websites and publications while also writing longer, more complex stories with context and perspective.  
  • Be deft at social media reporting.  
  • Able to develop sources and resources, generate story ideas and meet deadlines to create content placing the utmost emphasis on balanced reporting and ethical standards. 
  • Skilled at shooting and editing photography and video from the scene of news.   


  • Candidates should have a bachelor's degree, journalism preferred, and some professional reporting experience. 

Other requirements of the position include:  

  • Work the equivalent of a 5-day, 40-hour week, which may include night shifts and weekend work.  
  • Possess excellent communication skills, show initiative and exercise good news judgment.  
  • Ability to handle daily, short-term and long-term assignments simultaneously.  
  • Skill and experience working with digital photography and video creation.  
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
